Planning Permission Guide

If you are thinking of extending or altering your home, you may need to apply for planning permission before you go ahead.

Responsibility generally rests with planning authorities within your local council. It is always a good idea to consult with them before you begin making any changes to your home.

What Alterations Require Planning Permission?

Certain types of minor changes will not require planning permission. These are mainly internal changes or small modifications to the outside of the property, such as the installation of telephone connections or alarm boxes.

What Happens If Planning Permission Is Not Obtained?

If you build something without obtaining planning permission first, you may be required to make significant alterations which can be costly or be asked to completely remove any unauthorised building work.

It is also important to remember that new building work also needs to comply with building regulations. Planning permission does not regulate building standards or the construction processes involved and you should aim to seek further advice.

The Planning Portal

You can find more information, guidance and submit an online application to the government's main planning site, the Planning Portal.
